Char Oud Vietnam — Rich, Smoky & Our Best Seller
Char Oud is one of the most popular types of Vietnamese agarwood — and our best-selling chip for good reason. It delivers a rich, smoky, and deeply satisfying fragrance that fills a room quickly and lingers long after burning. If you’ve tried lighter grades like Flat Oud and want something with more depth and intensity, Char Oud is the natural next step.
Sourced from Aquilaria crassna trees in Khánh Hòa, Quảng Nam, and Hà Tĩnh — three of Vietnam’s most renowned agarwood regions.
Two Types of Char Oud
Natural Char Oud: Formed when the tree is damaged naturally by insects or microorganisms. The tree secretes resin over years, producing agarwood with a pure, complex fragrance. These pieces often have organic, fan-like shapes from the natural resin layering process. More rare and more expensive.
Drill-Root Char Oud: Created through human intervention — craftsmen drill into the tree to stimulate resin production. The fragrance is stronger and more stable than natural Char Oud, though less complex. Excellent value and ideal for regular daily burning.
Both types are available in our store. If you’re unsure which to choose, start with Drill-Root for everyday use — it’s more affordable and burns beautifully.
Scent Profile
Char Oud has a bold, smoky base with warm, resinous undertones. When burned, the smoke spreads gently and evenly through the room — not overpowering, but unmistakably present. The natural version has a slightly more refined, layered character, while the drill-root version is more direct and consistent.
Compared to other agarwood chips in our collection, Char Oud sits in the mid-to-upper range:
Flat Oud → light, sweet, beginner-friendly
Tiger Agarwood → bold, earthy with distinctive grain
Char Oud → rich, smoky — the sweet spot for most users
Ant Nest Oud → rare, complex, formed by ant colonies
Ky Hainan → ultra-premium, sweet and cool with deep complexity
How to Burn Char Oud
Place a small piece on lit activated charcoal inside a ceramic, copper, or wooden incense burner. For a cleaner, more controlled experience, use an electric incense burner — this method preserves the natural oils and extends the scent release.
Burn in a ventilated room with the window slightly open. A small piece (1–2g) is enough for 15–30 minutes of rich fragrance. Browse our full range of incense burners for the best setup.
Beyond Burning
Char Oud is also widely used as a raw material for oud essential oil production and handmade incense sticks. Some customers keep small pieces in sealed containers or closets as a long-lasting natural air freshener.
Storage Tips
Keep Char Oud in a sealed bag or airtight container away from direct sunlight and moisture. Agarwood retains its scent for years when stored properly — and many enthusiasts say the fragrance deepens with age. For detailed instructions, read our agarwood storage guide.

Every piece of Char Oud from Oudgo is hand-selected from trusted Vietnamese sources in Khánh Hòa, Quảng Nam, and Hà Tĩnh, and checked for authenticity before shipping. Need help? Our support team is ready to assist with usage tips, storage advice, and our return policy.
