Root Bark Agarwood — Deep, Sweet & Earthy from the Tree Root

Root Bark Agarwood (Vietnamese: Bì kẹp rễ) is harvested from the root section of the Aquilaria crassna tree — where resin concentration is naturally higher than in the trunk or branches. The root is under constant stress from soil moisture, insects, and microbial activity, causing the tree to produce dense, oil-rich resin over many years. The result is agarwood with an exceptionally deep, sweet, and earthy fragrance that stands apart from trunk-sourced varieties.

Among agarwood enthusiasts, root-sourced oud is widely regarded as superior to trunk wood. Root Bark Agarwood sits in the upper tier of our collection — below ultra-premium Ky Hainan and Premium Select, but above popular grades like Char Oud and Ant Nest.

Scent Profile

Root Bark delivers a deep, grounding aroma with rich sweetness and earthy undertones. The opening note is warm and resinous, quickly followed by a distinctive sweetness that’s more complex and “rooted” than what you get from trunk-sourced Char Oud or Flat Oud. The earthy base lingers long after the burn — a signature of root-origin agarwood.

Compared to Ant Nest (which is complex and layered), Root Bark is more grounded and consistent — the scent is deep but steady rather than shifting in stages. Many users describe it as the most “natural” smelling agarwood in our range.

How Root Bark Compares

In our agarwood chips collection, Root Bark sits in the premium tier:

Flat Oud → light, sweet, beginner-friendly
Tiger Agarwood → bold, earthy with striped grain
Char Oud → rich, smoky — our best seller
Ant Nest → rare, complex, formed by ant colonies
Root Bark → deep, sweet, earthy — root-sourced, higher resin density
Ky Hainan → ultra-premium sinking-grade from Hainan Island
Premium Select → the finest Vietnamese oud in our collection

Why Root Agarwood Is Special

The root section of an Aquilaria tree is the most stressed part of the entire organism. Constant contact with soil bacteria, underground insects, and fluctuating moisture forces the tree to produce resin more aggressively and over a longer period than in the trunk. This results in wood with higher oil concentration per gram and a fragrance profile that is noticeably deeper and sweeter than comparable trunk-sourced agarwood.

Root Bark pieces typically have a rougher, more irregular texture than trunk chips — with visible bark remnants still attached. This is a natural characteristic, not a defect, and is one of the visual markers of authentic root-sourced oud.

How to Burn Root Bark Agarwood

Place a small piece on lit activated charcoal inside a ceramic or copper burner. For Root Bark, an electric incense burner at 120–140°C is highly recommended — the slow, controlled heat draws out the full depth of the root oils without burning them off too quickly.

Use 1–2g per session for 20–30 minutes of rich fragrance. Due to the higher resin content, Root Bark tends to burn slightly longer than comparable amounts of trunk-sourced agarwood. Browse our full incense burner collection for the best setup.

Beyond Burning

Root Bark Agarwood is prized as a raw material for high-quality oud essential oil extraction — the higher resin content yields more oil per gram. It’s also used in premium incense production where the deep, sweet base note is particularly valued.

Storage Tips

Store in an airtight container away from direct sunlight and moisture. Root Bark Agarwood’s high resin content means it ages exceptionally well — the sweetness deepens over time when stored properly. For detailed care instructions, read our agarwood storage guide.
