Merauke Indonesian Agarwood — Warm, Woody & Distinctly Different from Vietnamese Oud
Merauke Agarwood comes from the forests of Merauke, Papua, Indonesia — one of the last regions where wild agarwood trees still grow in significant numbers. The Aquilaria species found here produces oud with a distinctly different character from Vietnamese varieties: warmer, woodier, and softer, with a smooth sweetness that many users find immediately appealing.
If you’ve only ever tried Vietnamese agarwood, Merauke offers a completely different experience — and comparing the two side by side is one of the most interesting things you can do as an oud enthusiast.
Scent Profile
Merauke agarwood has a warm, woody base with a smooth, slightly sweet character. Compared to Vietnamese oud (which tends toward bold, smoky, or resinous profiles), Merauke is gentler and rounder — less intensity, more warmth. The smoke is clean and pleasant, with none of the sharpness that some beginners find challenging in higher-grade Vietnamese chips.
The scent is consistent throughout the burn — it doesn’t shift in stages like Ant Nest or Ky Hainan. This makes Merauke an excellent “background” oud for scenting a room over extended periods without demanding attention.
Vietnamese vs Indonesian Oud
This is one of the most common comparisons in the agarwood world. The key differences:
Vietnamese oud → bolder, more complex, smoky/resinous, higher resin density, generally more expensive
Indonesian (Merauke) oud → warmer, softer, woodier, more approachable, excellent value
Neither is “better” — they’re different experiences. Many users burn Vietnamese oud for special sessions and Indonesian oud for everyday use. Our Agarwood Starter Kit includes a Merauke sample alongside 6 Vietnamese samples so you can compare them directly.
How Merauke Compares in Our Collection
In our agarwood chips range, Merauke is the only non-Vietnamese origin:
Flat Oud (VN) → light, sweet, beginner-friendly
Tiger (VN) → bold, earthy with striped grain
Merauke (Indonesia) → warm, woody, softer — the Indonesian contrast
Drill-Root (VN) → deep, resinous from tree root
Char Oud (VN) → rich, smoky — our best seller
Ant Nest (VN) → rare, complex, formed by ant colonies
How to Burn Merauke Agarwood
Place a small piece on lit activated charcoal inside a ceramic or copper burner. Merauke burns evenly and easily — it’s very forgiving for beginners. An electric incense burner at 120–140°C also works well for a cleaner, longer-lasting session.
Use 1–2g per session for 15–25 minutes of warm, woody fragrance. Browse our full incense burner collection for the best setup.
Beyond Burning
Merauke agarwood is widely used in the Middle Eastern market for blending with other oud varieties and for oud oil production. Its smooth, warm profile makes it an excellent base material for incense blends as well. Some customers enjoy keeping a piece in their car or closet as a natural air freshener — Merauke’s gentle scent works well for passive use.
Storage Tips
Store in a sealed bag or airtight container away from direct sunlight and moisture. Merauke agarwood holds its scent well over time. For detailed care instructions, read our agarwood storage guide.
