Agarwood Properties: Density, Grades & How to Identify Quality Oud

April 23, 2025 Nguyen Van An 0 Comments

What is the Specific Gravity for Agarwood Chips?

Premium agarwood chips possess a density greater than water, causing them to sink when immersed. This high specific gravity results from the concentrated resin permeating the wood fibers. The innermost layer of infected agarwood, where oil concentration is highest, produces chips with the greatest density and value.

Different layers of agarwood within a tree exhibit varying densities. The outer layer, called Agarwood Carcass, typically contains little to no oil. The middle layer, known as Giac Tram, has unevenly distributed oil. The innermost layer, with its rich, evenly distributed oil density, produces the most valuable Agarwood Chips.

What is the Specific Gravity for Agarwood?

As noted earlier, scientific measurements have determined that Grade-1 agarwood—specifically insect-infested agarwood—has a density of 0.641 g/cm³. This density correlates with its high ether extract content of approximately 18.90%, total phenolic content of 3.5 mg GAE/g, and flavonoid content of 7.82 µg QE/ml.

The specific gravity of agarwood varies based on several factors including species, geographic origin, age of infection, and the section of the tree from which it comes. This variation contributes to the diverse characteristics found in Agarwood Oil from different sources.

What is the Best Season for Agarwood Explant Collections?

While traditional harvesting typically occurs during dry seasons for accessibility reasons, the optimal collection time for agarwood depends more on the infection’s maturity than on seasonal factors. For cultivated agarwood, trees are typically grown for 7-10 years before artificial inoculation, with an additional 2-5 years needed for significant resin development.

The best Ceramic Incense Holder collections complement agarwood harvested at peak maturity, enhancing both the presentation and experience of this precious material.

What is Aloeswood?

Aloeswood is simply another name for agarwood, the resinous heartwood from Aquilaria trees. The term “aloeswood” has historical origins and should not be confused with the succulent plant genus Aloe. This fragrant wood is also known by various regional names including eaglewood, gharuwood, oud, oudh, jinko, gaharu, and chen xiang.

The scientific name for the primary source tree is Aquilaria malaccensis Lam. or Aquilaria agallocha. These evergreen trees are native to northern India, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam, growing up to 40 meters high with sweetly-scented, snow-white flowers.

What is Agarwood in Bisaya?

In the Bisaya language spoken in parts of the Philippines, particularly in the Visayas and Mindanao regions, agarwood is typically referred to as “lapnisan” or “lanete.” The Philippines has a long tradition of using agarwood in folk medicine and spiritual practices, with Agarwood Bracelets reflecting the cultural significance of this material in the region.
