Sustainable agarwood cultivation is a documented production system—not simply planting Aquilaria trees. It combines legally sourced planting material, species-appropriate site management, measured induction, evidence-based harvest decisions, batch traceability and protection of wild populations. Plantation origin can reduce pressure on wild trees, but it does not by itself prove that a product is legal, sustainable or high quality.

What makes agarwood cultivation sustainable?
A sustainable system can show where its planting stock came from, how trees and land are managed, why and when trees are induced or harvested, and how each lot remains legal and traceable. Planting trees is only one component. A plantation can still create risk if it uses poorly documented parent stock, moves material outside appropriate ranges, relies on damaging induction without controls, clears diverse habitat, or mixes legal plantation product with wild material.
The 2022 joint ITTO–CITES review reports that plantation production has expanded across South, East and Southeast Asia while illegal and unsustainable wild harvest continues. Its recommendations include plantation registration and inspection, traceability systems, control of parent stock, transport permits, population monitoring and protection or recovery of wild trees. These are stronger indicators than a vague “eco-friendly” label.
What should a sustainable agarwood cultivation plan include?
Start with a site-specific management plan and a traceable record system before planting. The following framework is a due-diligence checklist, not a universal agronomy prescription.

How should species and site be selected?
Use a currently accepted species identity, lawful planting stock and local forestry advice; do not choose from a country reputation alone. Aquilaria crassna, A. malaccensis and A. sinensis are widely discussed plantation species, but they differ in native range and site response. A nursery label is a claim, not independent identification.
The ITTO–CITES review describes both monoculture plantations and agroforestry systems in which Aquilaria is integrated with food, fodder, rubber, fruit or other crops. Agroforestry can diversify land use and interim income, but success depends on competition, shade, access, local ecology and farmer objectives. Neither monoculture nor agroforestry should be called sustainable without site evidence and management records.
Record provenance even when seedlings are locally produced. The same report recommends controlling parent stock and considering genetic diversity rather than moving seed, seedlings or cuttings indiscriminately. How many agarwood trees can be planted per acre?
There is no defensible universal number of agarwood trees per acre. A theoretical grid is calculated as usable area divided by the space assigned to each tree, but real plantations also need roads, drainage, buffers, buildings, firebreaks, companion crops and room for thinning.
For illustration only, a 2.5 m × 2.5 m grid equals 1,600 theoretical positions per hectare, or about 647 per acre before operational exclusions. The ITTO–CITES review cites one Malaysian A. malaccensis example at this spacing and separately documents plantations with much higher density; it does not establish either as a universal best practice. Local species performance, mortality, disease risk, canopy competition and machinery access should determine the final layout.
When should an agarwood tree be inoculated?
Inoculation should be based on tree size, health and a documented protocol rather than a fixed birthday. The ITTO–CITES review describes about 10 cm DBH as a recommended size in several reviewed systems. It reports that some growers begin low-cost mechanical wounding around six years when that diameter has been reached, while its executive summary uses roughly eight years to reach 10 cm DBH as a broader planning example.
Those are reported ranges, not a guarantee. Growth varies with species, planting stock, soil, water, climate, competition and management. Induction methods also differ:
- Mechanical wounding is accessible but often creates localized resin and uncertain quality.
- Biological inoculation introduces selected microbial material through a wound; outcomes depend on organism, tree, delivery method, site and monitoring period.
- Chemical or signal-based systems can distribute induction through more tissue, but inputs, worker safety, environmental handling and product testing must be documented.

How many years does agarwood take to harvest?
A harvest date should follow evidence of resin development, not a universal age claim. In the systems reviewed by ITTO and CITES, trees may require approximately eight years to reach an often-used 10 cm DBH threshold and two years or more after effective inoculation. Repeated mechanical treatment may continue for three to five years, and some growers wait longer. These observations cannot predict one farm’s rotation or product grade.
A harvest-readiness decision should review:
- verified species and tree ID;
- current DBH, health and structural stability;
- induction method, date, location and treatment history;
- documented sampling or evaluation of resin extent and aroma chemistry where appropriate;
- expected product form and minimum usable grade;
- economic costs, mortality and opportunity cost;
- local harvest authorization, transport and CITES/export requirements.
Do not promise kilograms of wood or oil per tree from age alone. Resin distribution is heterogeneous, and oil yield also depends on material selection, moisture, preparation and distillation. Use the agarwood grading framework after harvest rather than treating plantation age as a grade.
What does sustainable harvesting require?
For plantation material, sustainable harvest means a lawful, traceable decision supported by tree and resin evidence; for wild populations, it also requires a defensible non-detriment finding and population management. The two sources must not be mixed in records or marketing.
For each harvested tree or section, retain its field ID, induction history, authorization, harvest date, recovered material by product form and the lot IDs created during processing. Record waste and residues rather than making an unsupported “zero waste” claim. If a tree is partially harvested, document the method and subsequent survival; partial removal should not automatically be described as non-destructive.
Wild harvest has a higher evidence burden. CITES non-detriment findings are intended to assess whether authorized export would harm the species’ survival. Plantation expansion does not repair depleted wild populations by itself; protection, surveys, regeneration and enforcement remain separate conservation actions.
Do CITES documents prove sustainability or quality?
No. CITES documentation addresses regulated international trade; it is not a product-quality grade or a complete sustainability certification. A permit or certificate can be an important legal record, but buyers should also examine declared species, source code, product description, quantities, exporter, validity and consistency with the physical lot.
Likewise, “plantation-grown,” “organic,” “ethical” and “sustainably sourced” are claims that need scope and evidence. Ask what entity issued a certificate, what standard and sites it covers, whether the certificate is current, and whether the product lot falls within its scope. A seller-created certificate is disclosure, not independent verification.
International and domestic rules vary and change. Consult the relevant national CITES Management Authority and forestry/plant-health authorities before harvest or trade. For the U.S., APHIS states that most imported plants and seeds for planting require a PPQ 587 permit and that commodity/origin requirements should be checked in ACIR. What should an agarwood traceability record contain?
A traceability record should connect the finished lot back to a lawful source without gaps. At minimum, retain:
- accepted or declared taxon and identification method;
- nursery and parent/seed source, plantation and plot;
- tree or cohort identifiers and planting date;
- induction method, inputs, operator and dates;
- harvest authorization, tree IDs, date and weights;
- every lot split, combination and processor transfer;
- product form and net quantity;
- domestic transport, phytosanitary, CITES and customs records where applicable;
- seller invoice and the evidence supporting origin, plantation and sustainability claims.
Digital tools can help, but a QR code is only an interface. It does not prove that the underlying identity, measurements and documents are accurate. Periodic reconciliation between field inventory, processing yields and sales reduces the risk of undocumented material entering the chain.

- Confirm land status, current local rules and the responsible authorities.
- Record the accepted species name and lawful planting-stock provenance.
- Assess site suitability and choose a layout that includes operational space and future thinning.
- Protect genetic diversity and avoid undocumented movement of propagation material.
- Tag trees or cohorts and record survival, DBH, health, pests and maintenance.
- Select an induction protocol only when trees meet documented size and health criteria.
- Record treatment details and compare outcomes; do not assume one method guarantees resin.
- Base harvest on resin, tree, legal and economic evidence—not age alone.
- Keep plantation and wild-origin material separate throughout processing.
- Reconcile field, harvest, processing, permit and sales records by lot.
Where should product-care and heating questions go?
