Short answer: “Real” should mean that the item contains the agarwood material it claims to contain, normally resin-bearing wood from an Aquilaria or Gyrinops source, or an accurately described derivative. Authenticity is not the same as quality. Genuine material can be pale, low in resin, cultivated, or modest in aroma; a dark, heavy, strongly scented item can still be dyed, impregnated, blended, or mislabeled.

What Counts as Real or Fake Agarwood?

Real agarwood is an accurately represented material or derivative from an agarwood-producing tree. A fake or adulterated product substitutes another wood, adds dye or fragrance without disclosure, dilutes oil, uses a molded composite while claiming solid wood, or makes an unsupported species, origin, wild-source, resin-content, or purity claim.

A synthetic oud accord is not automatically counterfeit: it is a legitimate fragrance material when the label clearly says “oud accord,” “oud fragrance,” or equivalent. The problem is representing that accord as pure distilled agarwood oil. Likewise, an incense binder is not automatically evidence of a fake product; it becomes misleading when a blended formula is sold as 100% agarwood powder.

The botanical and trade context matters. Kew recognizes Aquilaria malaccensis as an accepted species in the family Thymelaeaceae, but agarwood in trade also comes from other Aquilaria and Gyrinops species. CITES notes that wood anatomy can distinguish these genera from some look-alike woods, yet it generally cannot separate Aquilaria or Gyrinops to species level. A seller should therefore not claim that one glance at grain proves an exact species or country.

Start with the Product Form

The correct test depends on what you are buying. Methods that provide limited screening information for a raw chip may be useless—or destructive—for a bracelet, oil, or finished incense product.

1. Inspect the Appearance and the Claim Together

Appearance is a screening clue, not a verdict. Resin-bearing agarwood often shows irregular darker zones or streaks within lighter wood, but color varies with species, resin formation, processing, surface finish, lighting, and age. Uniformly dark material deserves questions, yet naturally pale material is not automatically fake.

Use a phone macro lens or 10x loupe to compare the surface, end grain, cut edges, and—on beads—the inside of drill holes. Look for a coherent structure rather than one “magic” pattern:

  • Does dark coloration continue into cut or drilled areas, or is it only a surface coating?
  • Are pores or crevices filled with an opaque wax, pigment, adhesive, or scented material?
  • Do multiple beads show natural variation while remaining consistent with one disclosed lot?
  • Does the product description distinguish solid wood, resin-bearing wood, powder composite, oil, and fragrance?

“White agarwood” is not a standardized international grade. Sellers may use it for pale, low-resin Aquilaria wood, while similar language can also be used around other fragrant woods. 2. Feel the Texture—but Treat It as Screening

Texture can reveal a finish or composite, but it cannot authenticate agarwood. Raw chips may feel dry, fibrous, smooth, rough, or slightly resinous depending on the cut and resin distribution. Polished beads may feel smooth because of sanding, wax, or normal skin oils—not because they are “high grade.”

With clean, dry hands, check for an unexplained sticky coating, pigment transfer, soft filler at drill holes, crumbling compressed powder, or an oily film that is inconsistent across the item. Ask whether wax, oil, dye, perfume, resin impregnation, or stabilization was used. A disclosed finish may be acceptable; an undisclosed treatment changes what the product is.

Do not scratch, sand, boil, or soak a finished bracelet unless you own it, accept the damage risk, and have no safer route. Such actions can remove finish, swell wood, weaken cord, and reduce return rights without producing a conclusive answer.

3. Evaluate the Aroma—Not as Proof

Aroma is informative when assessed in context, but no single scent description proves authenticity. Agarwood odor changes with botanical source, resin formation, storage, extraction, heat, dose, and individual perception. Added fragrance can imitate familiar “oud” notes, while genuine low-resin wood may smell faint at room temperature.

For a non-destructive screen, use a consistent method:

  1. Smell the item in neutral air before touching it.
  2. Record immediate notes, intensity, and any solvent, perfume, smoke, or musty character.
  3. For wood or beads, warm the item only with clean hands for 20–30 seconds and smell again.
  4. Rest for several minutes, then check whether the character changes or simply collapses.
  5. Compare samples blind when possible; do not reveal price or origin to the evaluator first.

A harsh synthetic opening may indicate added fragrance, but it is not proof. A complex, evolving aroma may support the seller’s description, but it is still not species authentication. 4. Perform a Controlled Heating Test—Only When Safe

Controlled heating can compare aroma behavior in a sample of raw wood, but an uncontrolled burn test does not prove that the material is real. Open flame adds combustion odors, destroys the sample, and may expose you to smoke, finishes, dyes, adhesives, or added fragrance.

If the seller provides a sacrificial raw chip and you are permitted to test it, prefer indirect, low, repeatable heat in good ventilation. Record sample mass, device, temperature setting, distance, start time, aroma phases, visible residue, and stop time. Use identical conditions for comparison samples. Never heat oil directly on an open flame, and never burn a finished bracelet, treated bead, glued item, or unknown incense indoors as an “authentication test.”

What can heating tell you? It can reveal how one sample behaves under defined conditions and whether a volatile surface fragrance disappears quickly. What can it not tell you? It cannot by itself prove botanical species, geographic origin, wild versus cultivated source, legal provenance, purity percentage, or grade.

5. Check Weight and Density—Do Not Equate Sinking with Authenticity

Weight and density can support a resin-content assessment for comparable raw wood samples, but “sinks = real” is false. Genuine low-resin agarwood can float. A non-agarwood material can sink because it is naturally dense, waterlogged, mineral-filled, resin-impregnated, or weighted. Shape, trapped air, moisture, finish, and measurement error also affect a simple water test.

For an owned raw sample, calculate bulk density only when you can measure mass and volume reliably. State the unit, instrument precision, moisture condition, and method. Irregular chips are difficult to measure accurately by dimensions, and water displacement may wet or damage them. Compare like with like; do not compare a polished bead, an irregular chip, and a carved block as if density alone gave a grade.

6. Verify the Seller, Lot, Origin, and Evidence

Traceable lot evidence is stronger than a generic “certificate of authenticity.” Before buying, ask for facts that can be tied to the exact item or batch: business identity, invoice, product form, declared botanical source when known, country of origin, cultivated or wild claim, treatment disclosure, extraction method for oil, ingredient list for incense, and photographs or lab files that match the lot number.

All Aquilaria and Gyrinops species are covered by CITES Appendix II, but document requirements and exemptions depend on the product form, quantity, route, purpose, and national rules. For cross-border purchases, check the current official requirements before shipment; “wild” or “rare” is a claim to verify, not a quality badge.

A useful certificate identifies the issuer, method, sample or lot, date, result, limitations, and a way to verify the document. A logo on seller letterhead, an unrelated laboratory report, or a report for a different batch is marketing material—not item-level evidence.

When Laboratory Testing Is Worth It

Laboratory testing is most useful when the item is expensive, the claim is specific, the result may support a dispute, or the sample is part of trade enforcement. Choose the method for the claim; one test does not answer every question.

A peer-reviewed blind test used combined DNA barcode regions to identify market samples that included beads, wood blocks, and chips to species level. These results show why reference collections and validated methods matter; they do not turn a home smell, sink, or burn check into laboratory authentication.

Product-Specific Buyer Checklists

Use the checklist for the form you are actually buying, then save the listing, invoice, photographs, messages, and lot details in case the delivered item differs from the claim.

Raw Agarwood and Chips

  • Request the declared genus/species if known, country of origin, cultivated/wild claim, and legal documentation where applicable.
