Agarwood Composition: What Oud Is Made Of & Its Unique Benefits

April 23, 2025 Nguyen Van An 0 Comments

What is Oud Made Of?

Oud, also known as agarwood, is produced when trees of the genus Aquilaria become infected with a specific type of fungus called Phialophora parasitica or Phaeoacremonium parasitica. When infected, the tree produces a dark, resinous substance as a defense mechanism. This resin transforms the normally pale, odorless heartwood into the precious aromatic material prized worldwide.

The chemical composition of agarwood is extraordinarily complex, containing more than 150 identified compounds. At least 70 of these are terpenoids, specifically sesquiterpenes and chromones, with no monoterpenes detected. Other compound classes include agarofurans, cadinanes, eudesmanes, valencanes, eremophilanes, guaianes, prezizanes, and various volatile aromatic compounds. This rich chemical profile creates agarwood’s distinctive therapeutic properties and incomparable fragrance.

What is the Closest Fragrance to Agarwood?

Agarwood possesses a unique olfactory profile that makes it difficult to identify a perfect substitute. While no other natural material fully replicates agarwood’s complex aroma, certain combinations of woods like sandalwood paired with earthy and animalic notes can approximate some aspects of its character. Our premium Agarwood Oil captures the authentic essence that fragrance enthusiasts seek.

What is Agarwood Good For?

Agarwood offers numerous benefits that have been recognized for millennia:

  1. Kidney Support: It tonifies the kidneys, reduces excessive qi, warms the kidneys, and strengthens vital energy, making it valuable for kidney weakness and urinary issues.

  2. Cardiovascular Health: Agarwood supports heart function, dilates blood vessels, and helps maintain cardiovascular system stability.

  3. Digestive Wellness: It aids in body detoxification and purification while supporting digestive processes and enhancing intestinal health.

  4. Pain Relief: The analgesic properties of agarwood effectively alleviate headaches, chest tightness, and breathlessness3.

  5. Vitality Enhancement: Traditional medicine employs agarwood to address physiological weakness and increase overall vitality.

These therapeutic applications make Agarwood Accessories valuable tools for both wellness practitioners and individuals seeking natural health solutions.

What is the White Powder Used in Agarwood Incense?

The white powder commonly found in agarwood incense is typically acacia powder from natural trees, which serves as a binding agent. Quality agarwood incense is made by grinding genuine agarwood into a fine powder and mixing it with this natural acacia powder to create adhesion. This mixture is then molded into various shapes such as cylindrical sticks, lotus buds, or pyramids.

High-quality Agarwood Incense contains only natural ingredients without chemical additives, ensuring a pure fragrance experience and avoiding potential respiratory irritants.

What is the Specific Gravity for Agarwood Powder?

Research has identified that Grade-1 agarwood has a calculated density of approximately 0.641 g/cm³. This measurement helps distinguish genuine, high-quality agarwood from imitations. The specific gravity varies with resin content—higher-grade agarwood contains more resin, increasing both its density and value.

When evaluating Agarwood Chips, density serves as a crucial quality indicator, with genuine resin-rich chips sinking in water while imitations typically float.
